Older toilets use about 3.5 to 7 gallons per flush. Low flow toilets use only 1.6 gallons per flush and save your family between 8,000 and 20,000 gallons of water per year, per toilet. Dual-flush toilets take savings to the next level, because they have two buttons - one for a light flush at 0.9 Gallons and the other for a heavy flush at 1.6 gallons.

Dual-flush toilets have been very popular in Europe and Asia for years. They save an average of approximately 26 per cent more water than single-flush ‘Low-Flow’ models, and you can control when you need more or less water.

The ROI Calculation is based on a typical toilet costing about $150 and the dual-flush models costing about $300 with an average savings of 15,000 gallons and the cost of water at about $1.50 / 1,000 gallons.

The elegant flushing device is about as simple as can be… the left side = light flush and the right side = heavy flush. You decide, and save thousands of gallons each year.

Marin County Rebate program details:

High-Efficiency Toilet Rebate Program

Toilets are the single biggest water guzzler in your home, accounting for about 30% of residential indoor water consumption. Replacing older toilets with new high-efficiency models is an easy way to help trim monthly water bills—and help conserve our precious water resources.

To help our customers make the switch, the Marin Municipal Water District (MMWD) is pleased to offer the High-Efficiency Toilet Rebate Program. Through this program, MMWD customers can receive rebates of up to $250 toward the purchase of qualifying high-efficiency toilets (HETs) to replace older toilets that use 3.5 gallons per flush or more.

NOTE:   The HET Rebate Program has been extended through June 30, 2010.

What are HETs?
HETs, or high-efficiency toilets, are designed to use at least 20 percent less water than standard 1.6 gallon per flush toilets while still providing equal or superior performance.

Which toilets qualify?
Look for the WaterSense label.
In order to ensure that the new fixtures both save water and work effectively, MMWD is partnering with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) WaterSense program. WaterSense labeled toilets use an average of 1.28 gallons of water per flush and have passed rigorous testing standards.

All U.S. EPA WaterSense labeled HETs are eligible for MMWD’s HET Rebate Program.  For the full list of qualifying toilets, please visit:

www.epa.gov/watersense/pp/find_het.htm

What about performance?
Today’s high-efficiency toilets perform as well as—or better than—conventional, less efficient models. If you would like more information about performance, Maximum Performance (MaP) testing of WaterSense-labeled HETs can be found at http://www.cuwcc.org/WorkArea/showcontent.aspx?id=12064.
